The last three weekends have proved an incredible journey for KTM’s Jonny Walker. Pushing his way to the forefront of extreme enduro during the last 12 months has resulted in a June to remember for the 21-year old British rider.
Bagging some exceptional results during the Super Enduro World championship and then the legendary Hells Gate hard enduro in Italy, Walker arrived at the Erzberg Rodeo in Austria as KTM’s number one guy. Although only his second ever attempt at what is regarded as the toughest single-day race in the world, Walker delivered an astonishing performance.
Never faltering under the weighted pressure that goes hand in hand with racing for the orange marquee at their home event, Jonny rewarded their faith. Leading the way from start to finish, he crossed the chequered flag as the Erzberg champion.
With a hectic schedule to follow he briefly soaked up the enormity of the occasion. Quickly packing his bags he flew to Romania and begun four days of tough racing. Making his debut ride in the infamous Red Bull Romaniacs, he used his endurocross skills to top the opening day’s prologue but knew that the next few days of riding would be where the real challenges lay.
Although spending the opening two days trying to grasp the complex nature of GPS navigation he still managed to hold down third overall in the standings. On day three he battled through the pain of a dislocated shoulder to keep himself both in the race and in contention for a podium result. Saving his best for last, the KTM rider capped off an impressive performance with victory on the final day to secure third overall in the race.
With unfinished business to attend to, he promptly returned home to the final round of the British Extreme Enduro Championship and won. Facing a series of heats around an endurocross style loop, Walker stamped his authority on the event. Remaining undefeated in the four action packed races, Jonny added to his growing trophy collection and wrapped up the month of June as the newly crowned British Extreme Enduro Champion.
