Italian Absolutes Enduro Championship round four win for Danny McCanney ahead of Holcombe and Freeman as British riders dominate in muddy conditions.
Non-Italian riders dominated the fourth round of the Italian Absolutes Enduro Championship Cup in Pontremoli this weekend. Daniel McCanney and Steve Holcombe captivated the fans with what championship organisers are calling a “breath-taking duel” for victory.
Ultimately it was McCanney who kept strong and consistent aboard the TM Factory 300 during four laps and thirteen special tests in increasingly difficult conditions.
Uncharacteristically Holcombe struggled in the conditions and had several crashes during the second part of the event which gradually removed him from the chance of the overall win. Holcombe retains the overall championship lead.
Brad Freeman completes the all-English podium of this day thanks to a last perfect special test that allowed him to snatch the bronze medal from Thomas Oldrati for only five seconds. Oldrati had an exceptional day and held third overall for much of the day until Freeman pulled a blinder of a last test in the tough conditions.
On his return to enduro action and his first top-flight race of 2019, Antoine Meo surprised many, maybe also himself, with sixth overall behind compatriot Christophe Charlier.
Oldrati on a mission
The race weekend officially opened with the prologue in the heart of Pontremoli. Thomas Oldrati set the fastest time, laying out his stall for the weekend. The prologue was just about over when “a violent downpour” changed the conditions ahead of the race on Sunday.
Tommaso Montanari and Claudio Spanu battled for 125 class honours Montanari taking it by 18 seconds. In the 250 2T Gianluca Martini dominated the day by over three minutes ahead ahead of Maurizio Micheluz.
In the 300 2T class it was victory for Deny Philippaerts showing he still has what it takes and back from a foot injury. The 250 4T Thomas Oldrati put in a strong performance to better Matteo Cavallo in the difficult conditions and also in the points classification.
An exciting battle in the 450 class between Alex Salvini and Giacomo Redondi concluded with the pairing separated by only two seconds in Salvini’s favour. Salvini would end the day uncharacteristically down in 11th place overall with Redondi in 13th.
Andrea Verona and Matteo Pavoni took the Junior and Youth trimmings minutes clear of their respective rivals in class.
In the muddy Airoh Cross Test he wins the fourth round of the Daniel McCanney trophy, while the best driver among the technical passages of the extreme X-CUP Motocross Marketing - Galfer is Thomas Oldrati. Andrea Verona is the fastest in the young Enduro Action Trophy.
