The Johansson Yamaha Official Junior Enduro Team have, with immediate effect, officially ended their working relationship with Albin Elowson.
Following a positive start to 2018 and an extensive period of training and testing in Southern Europe, the Johansson Yamaha and rider Albin Elowson had been set to contest the Enduro Junior class of the EnduroGP World Championship in 2018.
Albin then crashed heavily while leading the overall at the opening round of the Swedish Enduro Championship, on April 21. Forced to spend some time away from riding and training, Albin missed the opening two rounds of the Enduro Junior World Championship in Spain and Portugal.
20-year-old Erik Appelqvist will replace Elowson in the Johansson Yamaha Official Junior Enduro Team. Competing for the Johansson squad in 2016, when he topped the 125cc Youth class at the GP of Greece, Erik focused on his studies in 2017 before returning to national and international competition in 2018.
Recently finishing as overall runner-up on the opening day of the second-round of the European Enduro Championship, the young Swede will compete in the remaining three rounds of the Enduro Junior World Championship in Italy, Italy and Germany.
Round four of the 2018 FIM EnduroGP World Championship – round three of the Enduro Junior World Championship – takes place in Tallin, Estonia on June 1-3.
Joakim Johansson - Johansson Yamaha Official Junior Enduro Team Manager
“It’s never an easy decision to stop working with a rider, but things simply haven't worked out with Albin. It’s in everyone’s best interest that we’ve decided to end our working relationship and move on with a rider that we’ve both worked with in the past and experienced success with in world championship competition. Everyone in the Johansson Yamaha team wishes Albin all the best. Now we’re focused on giving our full support to Erik Appelqvist, starting with the upcoming GP of Estonia.”
