The Isle of Man has a long history in top enduro riders, 20-year-old Jake Subachus is the latest Manxman making his mark in the sport.

Racing for the experienced MPS Racing Sherco team, Subachus will compete on his Sherco 300 SEF-R in British, European and EnduroGP championships for 2017.

Born and bred on an island famous for motorcycling, it comes of no surprise to learn that Subachus found his way onto two wheels at a young age.

“I was four years old when I got my first bike for Christmas and have been riding ever since. At age five I started racing motocross in local and British championships. From 50cc through all classes until 250cc racing in KWS, BYMX, Red Bull Youth Cup,” tells Subachus.

While motocross gave him his kickstart, it was during 2012 when recovering from a neck injury that the famous Knight brothers guided him towards woods racing.

“When I was recovering from my injury Juan convinced me to sell my motocross bike and buy what he called ‘a mans bike’. I got a Gas Gas EC 300 and they showed me enduro, which I was oblivious to until then. They mentioned racing the Fast Eddy’s GBXC races and I ended up winning the Expert championship.”

With the Knight brothers keeping a watchful eye on Jake, David put him in contact with Mick Seward and his MPS Racing Sherco Team.

“David said Mick was in need of a rider for a SuperEnduro race in Finland and put me in contact. I thought it was a once-off race but things obviously went went well and Mick ultimately offered me a place on his team for 2015."

Grabbing the opportunity with both hands, Jake went to work at transforming into an enduro rider, with 2015 delivering his first championship.

“I saw a great opportunity and started my training hard,” continues Jake. “Being able to go riding with great riders like the McCanney and Knight brothers has been a huge help with my progression.

“The first British round started off slow, not scoring much points, but I managed to progress throughout the year and was fastest in the majority of the tests at the final rounds to win my first British Expert Enduro Championship.”

“In 2016 I started off struggling due to tearing the ACL and MCL in my knee at the final round of 2015. Also moving up to the Championship class was a shock to how much faster the pace is. I gained some good times but overall lacked consistency and finished third in E1. I guess this is just part of the learning process.”

Racing for MPS Racing Sherco in 2017, the team have just returned from some quality training in Spain and with a switch to Sherco’s 300 SEF-R things are already going well.

“The bigger bike suits my style of riding much better and I’m looking forward to a really good year.”

Jake is supported by MPS Racing Sherco Team. The team’s sponsors include Sherco Factory, Metzeler, Twin air, ProGrip, Racebikebitz, Reiger, Talon, Forcefield body armour, Malcolm Rathmell Sports, HGS exhausts, Kenny equipment. Jake also receives help from The Polyclinic Physiotherapy
