Defending Women’s Cup champion Laia Sanz opened her 2017 account with a narrow victory over Maria Franke at the EnduroGP World Championship in Spain.

In what looks set to become a two-horse race for 2017 honours, Sanz had to deliver her best to take the win over her younger rival.

Starting things right with the Friday supertest win, Sanz was glad of that early 13-second buffer with just 10 seconds separating the duo at the end of Saturday’s day one.

German Franke answered back on the opening test this morning beating Sanz by 10 seconds.

Sanz retaliated to level the scores but two test wins by Franke put her out front at the midway stage.

Digging deep, Sanz played her hand on the penultimate test to go 21 seconds faster.

Despite Franke wining the final test by four seconds, Sanz had just done enough to take the win in front of her home crowd.

With the duo a long ways ahead of the pack, Jane Daniels (Husqvarna) finished some two minutes and 18 seconds behind in a comfortable third.
