KTM’s Alfredo Gomez kicked off the defence of his Extreme XL Lagares crown in the best way with victory in the downtown Porto prologue.

Showing no signs of jet lag having just arrived home from the Red Bull Minas Riders in Brazil, Gomez went on the attack.

A big fan of the tight and tricky Portuguese cobbled streets of Porto, Gomez was the last rider to start the qualification round and duly posted the fastest lap.

With the top 10 going through to the winner-takes-all final, Gomez did exactly what he needed to do and got his nose out front immediately. Entering the passageways leading he then held that until the chequered flag to take the win.

Making his Lagares debut, Jonny Walker (KTM) adapted fast to the city streets. Third off the start he then found a way past Sherco’s Mario Roman before entering the tight alleyways. Unable to do anything about Gomez’ lead, Walker placed second, with Roman close behind in third.

The race continues with an endurocross styled night race before Sunday’s main event — three laps in the Lagares’ mountains.
