Set to shake things up, David Knight makes his Red Bull Romaniacs debut next week with thoughts of a podium result on his mind.

Ready for his first attack at the world’s toughest hard enduro rallye, Knight feels like the speed is there to deliver a surprise result.

"A podium would be great,” told Knight. "I know I have the speed to mix it with these guys."

Despite having raced and won most of the events on the hard enduro calendar, the Romaniacs is one that has always evaded the 39-year old Manxman.

“Unfortunately, the Romaniacs is an event I have always had to miss due to other commitments” continued Knight. “It always seemed to clash with the World Enduro Championship, GNCC or other events and I never got the chance to compete.”

David is still recovering from a hip replacement that was carried out over the winter. Although quite a drastic operation, it hasn’t slowed him down, and his strength is nearly at 100%.

“The hip is better than it has been for years to be honest” admitted Knight. “My biggest problem is my overall fitness. I simply don’t have the time to train on the bike at the moment, due to family and other commitments.”

The Red Bull Romaniacs consists of a prologue event in the streets of Sibiu, Romania then four hard days in the trails of the Carpathian Mountains. Navigation is of the utmost importance on these seven-hour days and GPS management can be the difference between winning and losing.

“I have had some experience with the GPS this year. I raced in Mexico where I finished first on day one. Unfortunately, on day two, the GPS started to malfunction. That and a mechanical issue put me out of the race.”

Five days of riding is tough for any rider. Can the experience of the multiple world champion overcome any disadvantage he may have fitness wise? What are his goals for the event?

“I have raced Graham Jarvis already this year and we were still evenly matched, but he does go into the event with a lot of experience of the terrain and layout in Romania.

Overall, I am planning to have fun and ride my bike. I’ll take this year as a learning experience and hopefully be back next year to take the win!”

The 14th edition of the Red Bull Romaniacs is held in Sibiu, Romania from the 25th - 29th July.
