Dakar Rally gains World Championship status in 2021

FIM announce provisional 2020 Cross-Country Rallies World Championship calendar and bold plan to include the 2021 Dakar Rally in the following year's world series.


An annual meeting between the governing bodies of motorcycle and motorsport, the FIM and FIA, plus the Cross-Country Rally Commission, today brought forward the provisional 2020 World Championship calendar and announced the inclusion of the Dakar Rally as the opening round of 2021.

The FIA President of the Cross-Country Rally Commission, Jutta Kleinschmidt is said to have led the busy schedule which concluded there will be new categories in Rally competitions from 2020 with the aim to make competition safer: RallyGP (Pro & Experienced Riders), Rally2 (newcomers) and Rally Adventure Trophy (Autonomous riders without mechanical assistance).

The meeting also concluded a provisional FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship calendar for 2020 which will have four mixed events out of the five in total (only the Rally dos Sertoes of Brazil will be exclusively under the control of the FIM including Motos and Side by Side Vehicles (SSV).

Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge March 20-26
Rally Kazakhstan May 24-29
SilkWay Rally July 3-17
Rally dos Sertoes August / Sept. 2020 (TBC)
Rally of Morocco October 8-13

Dakar Rally gains World Championship status

The hotter news arguably was that after the FIM says is “many years of discussion”, the Dakar will become the opening round of the FIM Cross-Country Rally Championship in 2021. 

For now, that’s all we have and the FIM press release concludes “more detailed information will be published soon.”
