This edition of Local Focus catches up with Britain’s rising rally star Andrew Newland.
Andrew Newland hit the headlines in January when he placed an impressive second overall at the Africa Eco Rally.
The original race to Dakar, the Africa Eco Rally started in Monaco, France on December 29th 2015 and covered approximately 6500 kilometres of stages across Morocco, Mauritania and into Senegal with the final destination being the finish line at the famous Lac Rose in Dakar on the January 10th 2016.
His participation in the 2015 edition of the race was short lived when a crash on stage three resulted in a broken collarbone.
Entered in the 450cc class on his KTM 450 RR for 2016, it didn’t take long for Newland to feature in the sharp end of the outright results behind rally legend Pal Anders Ullevalseter.
Despite an electrical problem midway through the rally, Newland’s highlight came when he claimed a stage win in the latter part of the race.
Ending the rally second in both the 450cc class and outright standings has certainly put him on the map of rally riders to watch for.
For 2016, Newland is focusing on the Merzouga Rally on May 21-27, which also marks as part of the Dakar series. A strong performance there could earn himself a place on next year’s Dakar where he ultimately aims to be.
Along with aiming for Dakar 2017, Newland is also planning to tick the Baja 1000 off his bucket list in October.
Andrew wishes to thank his sponsors NGK, Zero Gravity, Moveology and Newland Construction for their continued support.
