Thad Duvall turned the tables on Kailub Russell at Steele Creek in Morganton, North Carolina, taking a narrow win at round four of GNCC 2018. 

 

The 2018 Steele Creek GNCC welcomed a new winner as Thad Duvall broke his duck and took his first win of the season ahead of Kailub Russell in a close contest. The dominant pairing in GNCC this year battled head-to-head for three hours of racing. Duvall would ultimately make a last lap pass, earning his first win of the season.

 

XC1 Pro Class

Kaven Benoit came away with the XC1 Holeshot Award but it wasn’t long before Kailub Russell made the pass for the lead and took advantage of the clear trail ahead of him. 

Coming through timing and scoring on lap one Russell checked in 24 seconds ahead of Duvall, followed by Ricky Russell and Trevor Bollinger.

Bollinger passed R. Russell during lap two and pushed, trying to make up time on the two front-runners. However, coming through at teh end of the lap Bollinger remained at a three-minute deficit. Steward Baylor Jr. was also on the move behind Bollinger coming in 54 seconds behind him. 

Duvall earned the lead on lap three as he and Russell pitted for gas. The two continued their wheel-to-wheel battle and though Russell had regained the lead with a lap to go, Duvall made the pass and came home just seconds ahead.

Bollinger would come through in third earning his first podium finish of the season in front of his family and friends. Baylor would finish out the day with a fourth.

Beta USA’s Jordan Ashburn was running fifth during the first half of the three-hour race before Josh Strang finally made a pass for fifth stick on lap three.

XC2 250 Pro Class

Pascal Rauchenecker grabbed the holeshot but as they came through on lap one Ben Kelley was in front followed by Rauchenecker and Josh Toth third. 

Kelley took home his third consecutive win, while Toth and Rauchenecker switched places by the finish to round the podium out.

XC3 125 Pro-Am class 

Alex Teagarden took the holeshot in XC3 125 Pro-Ams but Jason Raines took over the number one spot during the first lap. Jason Langenback then took over for the next two laps. 

Christopher Venditti became the fourth leader with a pass on lap four. Eventually the fifth contender, Jesse Ansley, made it stick and took his second win of the season followed by Venditti and Teagarden.

Jojo Bowden took home the top honours in 250 A. It was Bowden’s second win of the season. Brewer Cawley and Bryce Koster rounded out the Amateur class podium.

Morning Races

The 10 a.m. amateur race was nothing short of intense. Becca Sheets would earn her first win of the season and stop the charge of Tayla Jones. Sheets started in third but battled into the lead on lap two. Jones was second and Australia’s Mackenzie Tricker rounded out the podium in third.

Max Fernandez won the YXC1 Super Mini Sr. (14-15) class. Grant Davis racing the YXC2 Super Mini Jr. (12-13) would come through in the second overall position during the youth race followed by Ayden Pratt in third.

The 2018 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series resumes with the CST Tires Camp Coker Bullet on April 21 and 22, in Society Hill, South Carolina.
