2025 EnduroGP of Portugal Results: Fire stops Day 2 in Vila de Rei – Verona beats Garcia
2025 EnduroGP GP of Portugal in Vila de Rei results – Andrea Verona delivers the win for GASGAS, beating Josep Garcia on a day cut short by a fire in the forest and where Italian riders are on top of the podium in all main classes.
Nip and tuck day two of the EnduroGP of Portugal II sees the main protagonists in the championship separated by seconds on lap one. But chart-topping test times at a crucial moment delivers GASGAS Factory Racing’s Andrea Verona an important win in Vila de Rei.
The story of the day should be Verona’s win but a fire next to one of the tests will stand out as it brought a premature end to the GP of Portugal. It was a fire quickly put out but with all classes having completed two laps and six tests, the organisers called it due to the delays it had caused.
That meant a quartet of Italians – Verona for the overall win, Kevin Cristino in the Juniors, Alberto Elgari in Youth class and resurgent Francesca Nocera in Enduro Women – racing to victory ahead of their home round in two weeks’ time.
Verona on fire
- The timing of the fire was one thing but Andrea Verona had already done the work here in Vila de Rei. The Italian was in the same position as yesterday with Josep Garcia and Zach Pichon separated by fractions of seconds on lap one.
- TM Boano boy Pichon was leading at that point, actually by a slender 1.21 seconds from Garcia and with 2.72s on Verona.
- A mistake from the Frenchman on the opening Cross test of lap two gave the scratch lead to Verona, who was fastest of all. After another almost dead heat in the following Extreme test, Verona then closed out the lap with a run through the final Enduro test 6.45s faster than Hamish Macdonald, second fastest, and eight to the good of Garcia who had dropped it.
- With the day cancelled it meant Verona ends Josep’s run of four wins in a row and, with Pichon third, the Italian heads to his home round in two weeks back up into second in the EGP championship, 29 points adrift of Garcia and just four points behind Pichon in the E2 category.
- Both Garcia in second and Pichon third claimed the sketchy dry conditions made for their mistakes as they jumped on the podium yet again alongside each other.
- Hamish Macdonald had another solid result for fourth overall and first in E3, maintaining an unbeaten run all season on the big Sherco two-stroke.
- Miki Persson was lucky with the final test (the first of lap three, test seven, was later cancelled) being called at the end of lap two. The senior EnduroGP class were the only riders to complete the first test of lap three and the Swedish rider had a big get-off, grazing his arm and legs badly.
- Fortunately for Miki, because the main E1, E2 and E3 classes had completed more than 75% of the race (by FIM rules), but not every class had started it, that allowed the organisers to pull it all back to the end of lap two and test six. Which means Persson and Triumph Racing are credited with fifth. We hope that makes sense!
Cristino on a roll in Juniors
- A repeat performance on day two for Fantic’s Kevin Cristino gave the Italian the win comfortably ahead of yesterday’s runner-up, Leo Joyon, and Thibault Giraudon third – the French duo separated by just 1.8s.
- That’s four day wins on the bounce now for Cristino and, with Axel Semb doing no better than fourth today, the reigning Youth champ takes over the points lead from Semb in the Juniors.
Nocera bites back
- The Enduro Women’s championship leader coming into the Portuguese round, Francesca Nocera, had a nightmare on day one when her stator failed and caused her retirement.
- Day two and the Italian made serious amends with an emphatic victory by more than one minute over day one winner Rachael Gutish.
- Norway’s Marie Holt takes third place on the podium after another solid day and only narrowly adrift of Gutish.
- Gutish leads the series standings on 105 to Rosie Rowett on 94 and Nocera third on 90 points. The Women’s World Championship has one round remaining in Germany on October 17–19.
- Elizabeth Tett turned the tables back around on Lorna Lafont for the Enduro Junior Women win on day two.
Elgari turns DSQ to victory
- Another Italian making amends for a DNF on day one was Alberto Elgari. The TM rider had been excluded for swapping machines on day one but put it behind him to come out swinging on day two.
- Fast times in the longer Cross and Enduro tests gave him the advantage for a 10-second win over Romain Dagna second and Pietro Scardina third.
Cup win for Brazil
- Brazilian Patrik Capila was the Open World Cup scratch fastest rider after an improved day two in Vila de Rei. He beat day one winner Yann Dupic by 11.26s with Jordi Quer Molgo third and 5.73s behind.
