Built in the USA, shipped world-wide, the Boundry Trailbreaker makes carrying dirtbikes on a truck more practical, giving you more options for storage, towing and makes your pickup better balanced for driving – Enduro21 takes a closer look.

Utah-based company Boundry say the Trailbreaker is an all-new truck bed bike rack that eliminates common issues when transporting dirt bikes and mountain bikes.

If you’re a pick-up kind of person, you’ll know those issues include bouncing and premature wear on your truck tailgate, and the ability to tow or use the tailgate in the up position is usually not possible when you have bikes loaded. That’s not to mention the need for tailgate pads or additional hitch racks which can compromise backup cameras and parking sensors.

The Trailbreaker eliminates these issues, Boundry say, by letting you load bikes securely onto the bed but then close the tailgate upright – even in short bed pickups.

Having the bikes positioned up and therefore the tail gate up means you can carry kit and tools for a ride day without a trailer/toy hauler, potentially saving money but also keeping you gear and tools safer in the flatbed. You can also use the Trailbreaker rack to lock bikes to plus, you also have the option to then tow camper trailer or RV from a trailer hitch.

“As a lifelong mountain biker, I typically had a tailgate pad or hitch rack on my truck at all times,” said Sterling Petersen, Boundry founder. “When I bought my first newer truck with modern features, it opened my eyes to the compromises of today’s racks. That’s why we created a new system that gives your truck back to you.”

How it works

The Trailbreaker starts with a base similar to chase racks used in Baja racing trucks by design, as Boundry say off-road capability was high on the design brief from the beginning.

Bringing bikes into the centre of the truck decreases the cantilever effect that causes extreme movement in hitch racks, creating a more stable load.

Mounts can be added for dirt bikes, bicycles, and utility applications. The trailbreaker can fit up to five bicycles or two motorcycles, or a combination. It’s compatible with most pickups on the market today from compact to full-size.

Loading up

As for loading, they recommend first bringing the front wheel onto the lower cross brace that sits in the bed (an optional piece), then lifting it into the tray. It takes a little practice, and is even easier with two people, but is easier than you think.

Here’s a video that shows how to load it:

The rack is manufactured in Utah in the US, but they ship internationally. “We have a great shipping network already in place and can send them basically anywhere.” Boundry tell Enduro21.

For SUV and crossover owners, Boundry incorporated the DNA of the Trailbreaker into one of the toughest, but simplest and lightest vertical hitch racks on the market. The TrailHead rack uses a “C” shaped main beam to allow tailgates to fold down completely and hatches to open 75 percent of the way, without having to move or tilt the rack.
