2025 BP Ultimate Rally Raid Portugal Results: Daniel Sanders wins the rally and the world championship
2025 FIM World Rally-Raid Championship round four, the BP Ultimate Rally Raid Portugal stage five and final results see Red Bull KTM’s Daniel Sanders crowned rally winner and the new FIM World Rally-Raid Champion with a fourth consecutive victory.
Stage 5, a 287 km loop around Lisbon featuring 103 km against the clock, brought the curtain down on the second edition of the BP Ultimate Rally Raid Portugal. Sanders finished second on the stage, behind Red Bull KTM teammate Luciano Benavides, to secure both the rally win and the RallyGP world championship title with one round to spare — an unprecedented feat on top of him winning every round this season.
Edgar Canet completed the top three scratch on the stage and added another Rally2 victory for KTM moving the Spaniard into the overall class lead. Thomas Zoldos sealed a dream debut in Rally3, while Gaëtan Martinez (CFMoto Thunder Racing) took the stage and overall win in the quad category.
RallyGP: Sanders on top of the world
Daniel Sanders becomes the first rider to clinch the RallyGP title before the final event of the season. The Australian dominated Portugal with four special wins from six, finishing 3′40″ ahead of runner-up Tosha Schareina (Monster Energy Honda HRC), who lost his title. “Chucky” joins Sam Sunderland (2022), Luciano Benavides (2023) and Ross Branch (2024) on the roll of honour, setting records along the way — including the most RallyGP specials in a single season (15 and counting) and 23 overall. The only box left to tick in 2025 is Rallye du Maroc, and a possible Grand Slam.
Luciano Benavides added the stage win and third overall in Portugal (+12′41″), ahead of Honda’s Ricky Brabec (+14′34″) fourth, moving into second in the championship. Just three points now separate Benavides, Schareina and Brabec going into Morocco. Honda man Skyler Howes completed the top five overall aehd of Sherco TVS Rally Factory pilot Lorenzo Santolino, Ignacio Cornejo for Hero MotoSports in seventh, and Bradley Cox the last official finisher RallyGP on the Sherco in P8, 1:29.52 behind the winner.
Rally2: Canet takes the win and the lead
Edgar Canet capped his week with a fifth stage win and 13th of the season, adding Portugal to his Dakar and South African victories. He becomes the first rider since Mason Klein (2022) to take three Rally2 rounds in one season.
Canet topped the final classification by 5′21″ from Portugal’s Bruno Santos and 10′22″ from Michael Docherty (BAS World KTM), also snatching the championship lead from Tobias Ebster (Hero) by 21 points. Both Ebster and Docherty remain in title contention for Morocco.
Rally3: Zoldos gets it right first time
The Amaral brothers (Wingmotor) showed their pace again with Salvador winning the final stage ahead of Gonçalo, but Frenchman Thomas Zoldos had already stamped his authority, winning five previous specials to secure the rally and the championship lead. He heads to Morocco as favourite, with Carlo Cabini (RS Moto) and Ralf Molander (Desert Fox Rally Project) chasing.
