Steve Holcombe and Loic Larrieu share the daily wins at the opening weekend of hotly contested Italian Assoluti d’Italia Enduro Championship.
World and reigning Italian Champion, Steve Holcombe, leaves the opening weekend of the Assoluti d’Italia-Coppa FMI/Coppa Italia Maxxis di Enduro, with the leader’s red plate after two days racing in Gioia dei Marsi.
Keeping him honest, sharing the points table lead and taking the day one victory was Loic Larrieu making his TM Racing competitive debut. Danny McCanney took third overall on day two and third in the championship making it a good weekend for the small Italian manufacturer on home soil.
Day one to Larrieu
Day one proved a strong start to 2019 for Frenchman Larrieu who won the overall after a day-long battle with Matteo Cavallo, McCanney, Holcombe and Alex Salvini. A fall and resulting right knee injury was to hamper Salvini’s weekend.
Holcombe turned the tables, dominating the overall classification from the first MX test on day two, with Loic Larrieu and Christophe Charlier battling hard for top honours. A podium chance faded at the last special for Honda rider Charlier, who slipped to sixth overall. In front of him were team-mate Thomas Oldrati in fifth with Salvini bringing it home in fourth.
Victory on day two means Holcombe becomes championship leader after the opening weekend’s action though he stands equal on 37 points with Larrieu.
Classes victories on day two went to Tommaso Montanari in 125, Maurizio Micheluz in 250 2T, Deny Philippaerts in 300, Alex Salvini in 450 and Matteo Pavoni in Youth, Thomas Oldrati and Enrico Zilli won the second day in the 250 4T and Junior categories.
