First look at Triumph Motorcycles first 450cc motocross bike, designed in collaboration with the GOAT, Ricky Carmichael, the all-new Triumph TF 450-RC Edition.

With the Triumph TF 250-X launched to the world almost a year ago now, the roll out of different models from teh British manufacturer is finally coming. Our ears are naturally pricked up and ready for an enduro version of the 250-X, but it is the new TF 450-RC Edition which arrives first – the motocross 450 model which Triumph have announced first of all as a special edition.

Claiming the “strongest power to weight ratio in its class” Triumph say the new 450cc model has a compact, “mass-optimised” motor designed for “class leading power, control, and flexibility”. It’s a saucy one with DelWist titanium valves and Konig forged piston.

The 450cc engine sits in an aluminium spine frame with 48mm KYB forks and monoshock, Brembo brakes and Dellorto throttle bodies as the foundations for the new model.

The RC edition has its own extra touches though with Triumph’s Performance Yellow with black and white colours Carmichael’s iconic number 4, GOAT logo and key sponsor details.

Triumph’s Chief Product Officer Steve Sargent says: “At the end of 2023, Triumph revealed the long-awaited TF 250-X – the first in an all-new range of off-road motorcycles. We now have a brand new 450cc competition motocross powertrain, which Ricky Carmichael has worked with us to develop. It seems only right that the first edition should have Ricky’s name on it.”

Triumph TF 450-RC technical details

The TF 450-RC’s single-cylinder, SOHC 450cc engine is built for racing, Triumph say, delivering robust power while minimizing weight giving that class-leading power-to-weight ratio they boast.

At the core of this engine are top-tier components, including a Konig-forged aluminium piston, which provides strength and durability at high speeds, and DelWest titanium valves for improved airflow and faster actuation.

The TF 450-RC’s five-speed gearbox has a quickshifter fitted as standard for clutchless upshifts from second to fifth gear.

The 450cc engine has plenty to get your teeth into with 3-axis machined combustion chamber and ports, diamond-like carbon (DLC) coated rockers reduce friction, high volume airbox with tool-free airfilter.

The TF 450-RC engine management and intake/exhaust system has a Dellorto throttle body integrated with an Athena engine management system. This system allows riders to fine-tune parameters like traction control and launch control via the MX Tune Pro smartphone app, offering adaptable performance for varying track conditions.

The TF 450-RC features selectable engine maps, including a unique map customized by Carmichael himself.

The narrow profile, 450cc engine has light magnesium covers for weight reduction, a high-capacity clutch with a steel basket and plates, hydraulic clutch with Brembo master and slave cylinders.

The new model runs a list of special features to distinguish it from what you can epect from a standard model TF 450-X in the near future. Those include ODI RC4 Signature handlebars constructed from 2014-T6 alloy and feature oversized clamps and half-waffle ODI lock-on grips.

The top engine mounts on the TF 450-RC are hand-picked by Ricky, Triumph say, to enhance handling, especially under heavy front-end loads. This setup helps rider control and stability they explain.

An XTrig Holeshot Device comes as standard as well as a Triumph Racing Hinson clutch cover, a front disc guard, and a gripper seat cover.

Exhaust System

The exhaust system of the TF 450-RC is designed to complement its engine. The standard model features a lightweight stainless-steel exhaust with a resonator to improve cylinder evacuation, and hydroformed components for optimised routing and high gas flow.

If you want more though there’s an Akrapovič titanium exhaust available as an accessory, with a dedicated engine map.

Hand Welded Aluminium Chassis

The TF 450-RC features a hand TIG-welded aluminium spine and twin cradle chassis design developed over many years now by Carmichael, Clement Desalle and other riders for overall agility and handling on the track.

Key design elements, including new triple clamps, and dedicated top end mounts, are engineered to handle the increased power and loads on track.

KYB Suspension

The KYB AOS coil suspension on the TF 450-RC features an Air-Oil Separation (AOS) system for smoother, more consistent damping. Paired with this is the three-way piggyback shock, both adjustable for compression, rebound, and preload, the bike is naturally capable of a range of terrain, riding styles and riders weights.

Brembo braking components, Galfer discs, D.I.D DirtStar rims, Dunlop Geomax MX34 tyres and more add to the spec list.
