Triumph Motorcycles has announced a new “ambassador” and development role for Dakar Rally winner Sam Sunderland, leading to speculation that the British manufacturer could be embarking on a rally programme.

“Sunderland will be working with Triumph on new projects in both the adventure and off-road markets” – that was all the clue Enduro21 needed to put two and two together and assume there could be some exciting bikes on the horizon.

In a press release, Triumph Motorcycles confirmed they have signed two-time Dakar Rally Champion and FIM World Rally-Raid Champion Sam Sunderland to help develop and facilitate new adventure and off-road projects.

That opens a crack in the doorway to shed light on future models from the British manufacturer including middle or smaller capacity adventure models plus potentially a rally bike based on their 450 motocross platform.

“This collaboration with Triumph marks an exciting next step in my career,” says Sam. “I’m looking forward to being part of this British team which, alongside Red Bull, is ready to take on new challenges with me. I can’t wait to get started.”

Triumph Motorcycles’ Chief Commercial Officer, Paul Stroud, adds: “We have seen fantastic growth in the adventure sector over the last five years with the global success of our Tigers and Scramblers, as well as our decision to launch into the Motocross and Enduro markets for the first time. The opportunity to work with Dakar winner Sam Sunderland on a new adventure is very exciting, and we’re delighted to welcome Sam to the Triumph family.”

250 and 450 Enduro models coming

As most people know, Triumph has made huge strides in the off-road market with the 250cc TF 250-X and TF 450-RC models, plus the imminent release of the 250 enduro model (with a 450 enduro also on the way, we understand—but ssshh, don’t tell anyone…although maybe you heard it here first!).

Triumph has been expanding its international presence with its Supercross and Motocross racing programme in the States, while the Spanish team which includes Ivan Cervantes (below), has been instrumental in developing adventure and off-road models.

Meanwhile, significant input has gone into the new enduro model under the leadership of team manager and former world champion Paul Edmondson, alongside Jonny Walker.

Where would you naturally go next with bike development if not to expand your off-road and adventure bike ranges further? If the massive marketing impact and global exposure of the Dakar Rally isn’t a compelling reason, then what is? There is also a huge current trend for smaller capacity adventure models from other manufacturers and Triumph has had 400cc street models for a couple of years now, one of those in an Adv frame is quite likely.

But the real meat on the bones here is, if they already have the 450 engine, potentially a chassis based on the 450-X, and the right component partners to make it happen, plus now a hugely experienced rally rider...come on, you can’t blame us for speculating on this one!
